Psalm 119: 9 &11, "How can a young person stay pure? By obeying your word. I have hidden your word in my heart so that I might not sin against you."

I bet if I asked you what your favourite Bible verse was you could quote it by heart?  I can quote mine (Jeremiah 29:11), and I recall it frequently, especially if I'm having a bad day.

Knowing Bible verses that we can recall as needed is such a vital tool for our daily living.

There are so many fun ways to help children memorise scripture, but todays idea is one of my favourites, designed for children who are reading.

* Decide which Bible verse you'd like to teach; remember shorter verses are easier to remember!  My example is Hebrews 13:6, "The Lord is my helper I will not be afraid."

* Draw some items of clothing onto different coloured pieces of cardboard - socks, shorts, t-shirt..... They don't need to be huge but at least 30cm tall is a good size.

* Cut out 'clothes' and write one (or 2) words from the Bible verse onto each piece of clothing.

* Once you have all your pieces complete it's time to hang the washing!  Peg each piece to a child high clothes line.  Peg words onto line in any order.

 * Ask your children to read the words, it will not make sense so they need to find the right order by trial and error, re-arranging the washing.

* Once your children have the order worked out, ask them to say it to you a few times.

* As your children say the verse, take away a piece of clothing here and there so a few words are missing, just to make it a little trickier!

* You can do this activity a few times over a week until your child can say the verse from memory.

* If your child enjoys this activity, use it to help them remember other simple verses. Older children can help draw/cut clothes too.

The beauty of teaching our children memory verses is that it helps us to maintain the discipline of 'hiding God's word in our heart' too.

Have fun,
